[Vash has been putting this off. Someone he doesn’t trust, taking him, and poking at him leaves a bad taste in his mouth; but with Knives here…]

[After business has been taken care of and he’s talked to those he needed to, Vash heads out into the forest aiming for a river. It’s long past time to intensify his training with the spirits. For those who have gotten to know happy and laid back Vash - this is not him. He’s taking this training with Sona very serious right now and isn’t very chatty. His glasses are on.]

...but you know, most people would say the same thing about running around with a gun trying to keep everyone they meet from dying.

[Vash lets out a shy chuckle, mostly because he has to do that rare thing of pretending to praise himsef.] You'd be surprise how well a gun works if you're careful with it. Most of the time it doesn't even have to be loaded and it can stop fights.

Well, not counting Luceti, I think we all only really have one lifetime. [Is he misunderstanding? Or just pretending to be clueless?] We're all just doing what we can with the time we have, don't you think?

That does seem the best way to use one... [Ginko's had a brush too close with much less precise guns, himself]

[and he listens, without remarking. Because it's true enough.

a moment later, with a quiet smile-] Yeah, I do. [tips his head back.]

It really is, do you have any idea how much bullets coast? I'd much rather get a stack of pancakes. With extra syrup! [That's it. Moving farther away from the inital question.]

[soundless chuckle] Hn. That sounds more like you.

[but sorry, you're only going to get so far. He's quiet, almost long enough to give the impression he's through digging-- even adjusts the tight-pulling leather strap of his box. But then states evenly, like he's reviewing the attributes of some newfound mushi-]

So you and Knives are Plants. Different, but not so different from humans. [glance] In heart, more than anything, maybe.

And somehow he came to hate humans, enough to kill all of them; while for some reason you seem to love them... enough to die for just about any one. Human or no.

... and now this story is going to keep playing out, inside of this small bubble of life.

[Oh, good! Maybe it's done and he can get out of here. Just turn this way sloooooooooooowly. Quiet, no sudden movements, and he can-]

[So you and Knives- Crap.]

I guess it is. [If you were hoping he'd explain something; we're sorry, but you didn't phrase it in the form of a question.]

[It's okay; he needed the setup.]

So what are you going to do, about it?

[part of this answer is obvious, he thinks; it's the not-so obvious part he's driving at]

[Vash is quiet for nearly a full minute. It wasn't suppose to be like this. At home it was suppose to be just him and Knives. One final show down with no else to get hurt between them.]

I don't know.

[Knives seemed so different and this wasn't home.]

And how many people are helping you?-- or even know about this?

There are a few that know. Knives is a very dangerous man and sending a bunch of people after him could end in disastrous results. [His right arm clenches into a fist as he speaks.]

Exactly how dangerous is he?

Very. You should stay away from him.

That I was planning on.

I meant in terms of raw power, and purpose. How does he compare to Aku, or Yuber-- that you're so concerned about people going after him?

[Vash is quiet for a long time. Telling you what Knives could do would be also admitting to what he could do. It's nothing he likes to talk about. He still hadn't even forgiven himself for what he had attempted to do a couple months back. It was one thing for people to accept him for being different, but how would they feel if they knew he was a destructive monster?

Finally, with a sigh, he speaks.]

I don't think he's stronger than Aku, but he's close. He also can't teleport like Yuber, but he may be even more dangerous than him. I'm not sure how the power limit has affected him here, but if he wanted back home, he could destroy a city in seconds.

[A slight lift of the brow, but aside from that his expression is unaltered. A city; in seconds.

And Ginko thinks as much, himself. Sorry, Vash-- but he's thorough to a fault]

Are you that powerful?

[Vash gives a small nod of his head. Ashamed of himself and past mistakes.] But Knives has gotten even stronger since I last saw him. He's able to create knives, from his very body, and absorb bullets that are fired at him and shoot them back.

[An internal whew, a that. No wonder. You think in absolutes. Out loud, he muses] Sounds like some of Sanji's stories....

And it doesn't sound very impressive, compared to destroying a city in seconds. But he wouldn't be doing that with knives, would he?

No, he wouldn't. But I don't think he'd try to destroy Luceti while I and other non-humans live there. [Well, mostly him, but either way feel free to sleep at night.]

So he is protective of you, in a twisted way. [a sharp glance to the side. Although admittedly most people with a brain had probably guessed at that, already] And other non-humans... that's at least something.

But if you and he share the same power-- [why wouldn't you cancel one another out? he just answered his own question.

Vash won't kill him. Or even threaten to. And if that power is not as precise as his gunmanship seems to be...] Hnn.

It's not a power you're willing to use, is it?

Hm. I don't know if protective is the right word. [After all, when your brother sends of group of people out to kill you, it makes it hard to see that as being protective. Even if Knives didn't think the people he sent COULD kill him.] I just don't think he wants to kill me. [If that's what he wanted to do, he could have done it long ago.]

No. [A pause as he closes his eyes and thinks of July. All the buildings and people that were wiped away in only a moment. His left arm reaches over and grabs his right wrist, without realizing it.] It's too powerful to fully control. It just causes too much damage. [And one day Vash may shock Ginko if he ever finds out Vash has wanted - may still want - to kill his brother. He's done well so far with his guessing, but that one guess is wrong.]

Maybe he thinks he's protecting you from something else altogether. [that kind of hate is incompatible with your inverse ideals]

[He would be surprised, were he ever to learn it. Doubtful as that is. For now, he's concerned with the implications]

And you still don't think you should tell the whole village, about what he's capable of?

[A pause.]

He's my brother. He's my responsibility to take care of. [It was Rem's last request. That he was to take care of Knives.]

Maybe I should warn people about him, but I'm not sure if that would be best. Maybe here, where he doesn't need to protect anyone, and there are almost as many non-humans as there are humans...

[And he trails off with a slight shake of his head. Even as he says it he can't really believe it himself.]

I just, don't think trying to warn everyone will really change anything.
