["A word in my defense, Captain. Apples seem to be very popular this time of year."

He knew this dream. He knew it as more than a dream. A memory. The way the kids bit into the apples he bought instead of the ice cream they had demanded. Those young lives so full of energy and life. They had been so kind. Looking out for each other and the people who lived in the city with them.

It was a good city. It had been a great city. One of the largest on the planet. Filled with so many different lives and voices. He had played with those kids and they had so easily welcomed him into their group. What had he done for them in return?

"Oh. Hey, Vash."

What had he done in return?]

[A green eyed cat watches as her pet tosses and turns in his bed. He was usually so quiet when he slept that this was all just a bit unnerving to her. She tries a few meows to try to wake him, but it fails and she moves to jump onto him. Only as Kuroneko jumps from the desk to the bed Vash's journal falls to the floor. It shows nothing but the darken floor, but the audio picks up everything for those up early around 3am.

It starts off with unintelligible moaning. The very keen ears might be able to pick up a few words like: Stop. Light. And jumbled pleading. It grows in intensity and volume until suddenly the mutter stops and instead breaks into a scream.]

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH-AHHHHHHHHHHHH! GRAHHHHAAAH! NOT AGAIN! PLEASE NOT AG- [The scream cuts off as Vash fully awakens. Unable to catch his breath and breathing rapidly for a moment before the sounds of his feet hit the floor and they go running off out of the room followed by a door being slammed open. The audio goes quiet after that until Vash is finished emptying his stomach and returns to his room. Crying softly as he does.

Alert him to his open journal? Or for those who would rather speak to Vash in person the next day he'll be people watching at the fountain. Only lacking his usual cheerful smile and lost in distant thought as he sits on the fountain's edge.]

Huh?

[The sudden topic change confuses him for a moment until he realizes that this is probably Vash's way of getting his mind off of the nightmare.]

Oh, I've been fine. You know, life as usual. Nothing really interesting has been happening lately. I've just been taking classes and working at the tea house.

[Getting people to talk about themselves is a great way to avoid talking about yourself is a trick Vash has learned.] I didn't know you worked at the tea house, but I admit I don't drink much tea. And I suppose not having anything too exciting happen is better than a lot of bad things happening.

Yeah, that's how I feel too. I'm okay with things being boring as long as it means nothing bad is happening either. At least boring is something that isn't too hard to fix if you put your mind to it.

There's enough around Luceti to keep a mind busy if you look for it. So I'm glad things have just been normal and dull lately.

Same here. But I'm sure they'll probably give us some Shift or something now that we've been talking about how boring it's been lately...

Man, I hope not. Not sure the people here would forgive us for taunting a experiment into happening. [Vash's voice comes back just a little strained from having explained to someone else about the dream that woke them. Yet, he tries so very hard to keep his voice light.]

Something tells me we wouldn't be the first people to cause something like that to happen. I mean, they've been doing experiments for years, so I'm sure they've been inspired by some of the other residents before.

... right?

[In other words, if a Shift happens, it won't be all their fault, right?]

I once joked about teleporting hiccups. I now know I should have never joked about that. Teleporting hiccups are just awful.

Teleporting... hiccups?

[Emil isn't quite sure he understands.]

Yeah, every time I hiccuped I wound up somewhere new. A closet. A bathtub. The ocean.

That sounds like that one experiment all over again, only I'm not sure if it's better or worse than teleporting completely at random.

It was pretty bad. Every two seconds I was somewhere new. It got a little annoying and hectic after awhile.

I'm guessing holding your breath didn't help much, huh?

Sometimes, but usually I still kept hiccuping.

I'm sorry. That must've been a real pain.

It's alright to laugh. Now that it's over it is kind of funny to picture. I just don't want it to ever happen again.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I feel the same way about a lot of experiments too.

That's probably the best way to feel. Otherwise this place would probably drive you insane.

Or maybe we already are insane and just don't realize it yet.

[This is also a distinct possibility.]

But if we don't know that we've gone crazy, I suppose it can't really hurt us at that point. I think knowing you're going crazy is when you need to worry about it.

[He has to think about this for a moment.]

I guess you're right. We should just be happy that we are happy, even if it means we're also crazy.

Yeah, no use looking a gift horse in the mouth if you're happy. Thanks for staying up and talking with me a bit, but we should probably try to get a little bit more sleep, right? [He wasn't trying to get rid of Emil, he just felt bad keeping him up late at this point.]

[Because as much as he would like to go to sleep, he'd only like it if he's sure Vash won't be sitting up and worrying.]

Good. Then you're right, we probably should go back to sleep now before it gets any later.
